LIVING ROOM

Installation

London, UK

2004

The Living Room intersects the monumental scale of London’s Trafalgar Square with that of the average citizen. A steel structure elevates a twelve square-meter domestic living room to a height of fifty-nine meters. At the top of its ascent, the room pauses for an hour, hovering at the height of the Statue of Admiral Lord Nelson atop Nelson’s column, allowing viewers to spend private time with a national hero. Interior and exterior views from the Living Room are broadcast to a large LED monitor that acts as a counterweight and descends to the urban square as the Living Room rises to its optimal height. With its incomparable views of London, this private space is fully furnished and equipped with a working fireplace. Occupation is decided by random draw. (unrealized)
