PLEASURE/PAIN

Installation

1991

A medicine cabinet is bisected in the center by a single-hinged mirror. Etched in in the mirror with an electroluminescent material, the word “pleasure” is visible when opening the cabinet from the right side; when opened on the left side, the word “pain” becomes legible. Only one set of implements can be viewed at a time.

The medicine cabinet holds soap, a shaving a brush, an Ace bandage, a butt plug, cotton wads, a jar of prophylactics and bottles of colored liquids. Dangling from the lower shelf is a rubber glove, a speculum, a sponge, a straight edged razor, and tweezers.
